JENNETS TEAT PHOTOS CLOSE TO FOALING

Since meeting my friend, Dayle Haworth of Half Ass Acres in America, I also now always photograph our jennies teats & bags close to foaling.

lt is a great tool to help gauge their actual foaling day. We hand serve, but mother nature doesn't always read 'The Text Book of Foaling '. Jennies can foal anywhere from a month pre their due date, to a month over. We have observed jennies foaling 3 weeks either side of their due date at Poplargrove Stud.

We also have foaling alarms on our Jennies when they are close to foaling. With experience, you can usually tell which night/s to be on foal watch, stay home & be alert. Teat changes, behavior, white milk, there so many indictors.

BUT... they can always fool you. Even the most experienced breeder can find themselves with an unexpected foal standing next to it's dam one morning. Hence the alarms are great...

We have cameras in our stables but we do not tend to stable the jennets until post birth. We have found our girls prefer to foal outside with their friends close by. The more relaxed the jenny is, the happier the event for her.

These teat & bag photos, along with health & foaling records of our jennies are a great reference for future foaling !

We have included these photos in the hope that they may help you with your jennies birthing process!

Huge change overnight. Put foaling alarm on Suki as well. The way Suki's bag is going, l would say within 24 hrs - 48 hrs. We will know more this arvo. Vulva deep red inside but not all the way - lots of pink. Teats filling also. Bag will need to be more rounded and teats east-west. ie bursting at the seams like a full balloon. l have butterflies in my stomach with anticipation...

Ma Bell started her bag 22/7/14. Notes say 'Bag starting down her tummy. Quite surprised how far her bag's advanced over 2 days'.

Ma Bell's last filly foal was 3 weeks early. And she bagged up very fast the last 2 1/2- 3 weeks before foaling.

Notes say '10/4/13 Candy is miles away - teeny bag - not changed much for a couple of weeks.' 15/4/13 Candy bagging up

Candy's bag progressing fast - she is theoretically due in 4 days. Not going to happen. You can see her bag getting bigger by the pink skin patches getting larger

Candy's milk is whiter than this morning... She's bursting - super hard bag and teats. Vulva swollen and red inside, no wrinkles...Teats fully engorged/hard but could go more east west.. but we will see. l thought when she did progress it would go fast. So l think tonight
